@wander_japan7: Izumo Taisha (Izumo Grand Shrine) Izumo Taisha, located in Izumo City in Shimane Prefecture, is one of the oldest and most revered Shinto shrines in Japan. Dedicated to Ōkuninushi no Ōkami, the deity of nation-building, agriculture, and en-musubi (the binding of fates and relationships), the shrine is especially famous as a spiritual center for love and matchmaking. Historical Significance Believed to have been established over 1,000 years ago—some say even earlier—Izumo Taisha holds a central place in Japanese mythology. According to legend, Ōkuninushi ceded his land to the sun goddess Amaterasu’s descendants in a peaceful transfer of power, an event commemorated in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, Japan’s ancient chronicles. Unique Features • Main Hall (Honden): Designated as a National Treasure, the Honden is an excellent example of ancient Taisha-zukuri architecture with a massive, raised floor and steeply sloped roof. • Shimenawa: The enormous sacred straw rope adorning the Kaguraden (hall for sacred dance) is one of the largest in Japan, symbolizing the presence of the divine. • Two Claps, Four Bows: Unlike most shrines where visitors clap twice and bow twice, at Izumo Taisha, the custom is to bow four times—twice at the start and twice at the end—signifying deep respect to the gods. Kamiari-zuki: The Month of the Gods Every October (according to the lunar calendar), Izumo Taisha becomes the gathering place for all the gods from across Japan. While the rest of the country calls this month “Kannazuki” (the month without gods), in Izumo it is known as “Kamiarizuki” (the month with gods). During this time, rituals are held to discuss the destinies of people, such as marriages and connections. Popular Pilgrimage Site As a destination for those seeking good fortune in love, successful relationships, and spiritual guidance, Izumo Taisha draws millions of visitors each year. Whether it’s for traditional Shinto prayers or the powerful mythical atmosphere, it remains a sacred and deeply moving place for people of all backgrounds. #JapanTravel #TravelTok #HiddenGems #shrine
