#kairos Reflection Within each of us is a Spirit—a presence that connects and binds us to ourselves, to one another, and to the Divine. Yet, through the process of domestication, that Spirit can become buried beneath layers of cultural expectations—especially for young men. Too often, society permits them only two emotional expressions: stoicism and anger. This limitation alone gives rise to a host of inner struggles. At The Prep, we believe it’s essential to offer our young men a safe and supportive space where they can begin to explore their feelings and express them freely, without judgment. This is the heart of Kairos. Born out of the Jesuit tradition, Kairos is a retreat centered on three foundational relationships: our relationship with ourselves, with others, and with God. Over the course of four days, students are invited into deep reflection about who they are—and who they hope to become. Led by a team of seniors and faculty, Kairos is a sacred space: safe, guided, and rooted in love. For over 15 years, it has profoundly impacted the lives of the young men who attend, transforming how they relate to themselves, their peers, families and their faith. The retreat is anchored by courageous storytelling. Senior leaders and faculty open up about their own lives, helping to break down the masks we often wear to fit in, to protect ourselves, or to feel worthy. After Kairos, many students say, “I have changed.” But perhaps more accurately, Kairos helps strip away false beliefs so that their true selves—full of love and light—can emerge. Small group conversations offer students the chance to be heard and truly seen. These talks go far deeper than the usual exchanges in hallways, on stage, or in the locker room. In that vulnerability, students realize they’re not alone. Their experiences may differ, but at the core, their emotions are shared. And in being accepted just as they are, many begin to feel genuinely worthy of love and belonging. This sense of connection and self-worth often extends far beyond the retreat. Alumni of the program frequently report that the lessons of Kairos continue to guide them through life—as husbands, fathers, and compassionate men in the world. At its core, Kairos is built around a simple, yet profound truth: to love and be loved. To love oneself, others, and God—and to remain open to receiving that love in return. The word Kairos comes from the Greek, meaning “God’s timing.” For juniors and seniors stepping into this pivotal moment in their lives, Kairos serves as both a pause and a catalyst. Time and again, we’ve seen it alter the course of lives in ways only the Spirit can orchestrate. “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” — Matthew 18:20
