@simplifiedmaritime: 🧭 VHF radio can help—but it can also confuse. Different accents, time wasted, unclear intentions—it’s risky when seconds matter. That’s why COLREGs exist: a shared set of rules every vessel must follow, no assumptions, no negotiations. When both ships apply the rules correctly, there’s no need for radio calls. Stick to the COLREGs. Let actions—not uncertain words—keep you safe. 📌 Follow for more practical bridge wisdom. #COLREG #BridgeWatch #ShipToShip #MaritimeSafety #SeafarerMindset #VHFDiscipline
Here’s what actually happened:
Two ships nearly collided. One was sailing straight on the right sea lane, following COLREGs. The other tried an illegal U-turn over a double solid wave line. Instead of yielding, the second captain got on the radio and started mouthing off.

Rule 16 If a power-driven vessel approaches on your starboard side, they have right-of-way. Stop, slow down

Captain RAP :
This is the reason why communication using vhf radio is not recommended by the rules (COLREGS) during collision avoidance. We must follow the rules by taking action in ample time instead of radio call

Sa Rule 15 crossing situation sabi lang dun is if two PDV are crossing to each other and has the risk of collision the vessel which has the other vessel on her stb side shall keep out of the way. As long as pasok sa safe passing distance required by the company and as per OOW assessment hindi na need to make unnecessary actions. Correct me if im wrong po.
