When I host, I don't ask ppl to bring a dish/entree. My parents did Christmas Eve, the Italian way with ALL SEAFOOD. They never asked any of us to chip in as we got older, got married, had kids. One of my husband's cousins "hosts" and everyone is assigned what to bring. Pmo every yr and any "hosting" she does. The only time we do a "chip in" is when a bunch of friends get together and we know up front it's a chip in and that is 100% fine with me but if I invite you to my house for a BBQ or whatever, I don't ASK for anyone to bring anything unless they want to.
