And then you pay to get to one of those countries whilst adding on travel time. If you afford business class surely it’s just go from UK?

I work for an airline & get fare free standby travel (we only pay taxes and fees, plus it's upgradable if open seats exist in higher classes). LHR is by far the most expensive airport to standby out of on taxes and fees alone, and the luxury tax imposed on upgrades (even though the airfare itself is zero dollars) is so bad we just don't upgrade staff out of the UK

plus, if you fly out of Ireland, you dont have to deal with passport control in the US. You pass through at the airport and then it counts as an internal flight. Saves tax too.

Gatwick should not be a London airport, it’s in West Sussex. Which is so annoying for the above reason for me as it’s like 30-40mins from me

Going from Dublin (so not direct) it’s way more expensive than Heathrow. I travel frequently and London is always cheaper and a direct flight
