@twistedbugg: Robert Smalls was born into slavery — but became a war hero, a U.S. Congressman, and a symbol of Black courage and intelligence in the face of overwhelming odds. In 1862, during the heart of the Civil War, Smalls pulled off one of the boldest escapes in American history. As a 23-year-old enslaved man in Charleston, South Carolina, he commandeered a Confederate ship — the CSS Planter — disguised himself as the captain, sailed it past five Confederate checkpoints, and delivered it straight into the hands of the Union Navy. Not only did he secure freedom for himself, but also for his crew and their families. But Smalls didn’t stop there. After the war, he became a businessman, a leader in Reconstruction, and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives — where he fought for civil rights, public education, and justice for formerly enslaved people. Robert Smalls was more than a war hero. He was a strategist, a visionary, and one of the most underrated figures in American history. #robertsmalls #BlackHistory #civilwarhistory #americanhistory #historytok #unsungheroes #blackexcellence #freedomfighter #historicalfigures #historyvideo #historyfacts #reconstructionera #uscongress #slaveryhistory #escapedslavery #civilwarhero #blackleaders #africanamericanhistory #historymatters #knowyourhistory #truehistory #storytimehistory #tiktikhistory #educateyourself #underratedhistory
