Our house looked "fine" too. If people could see the damage behind walls & floors, they'd get why we're 200k in on our reno. Practically had to rebuild the place.

I think you should stain the fireplace wood a darker color, maybe replace the tiles and build shelving the same color wood to match the fireplace
