most relationships in america are exclusive by default. sometimes couples will open their relationship or practice polyamory, loving multiple people at once consensually

It never used to be this way. But feminism pushed this idea that exclusivity is possesive and this is the result.

No, in America the default is exclusive dating and if you don't want to be exclusive you must say that upfront. Only people looking for an excuse say "you didn't say we were exclusive" | this applies to boyfriend/girlfriend situations, not casual dating (e.g., speed dating or going out before becoming bf/gf)

a lot of time I hear this from women who have been cheated on because men will be ambiguous about the relationship that they want, to get sex out of people not looking for hookups and then lead them on for more sex while looking at "other options", closed monogamous relationships are still generally the default in the US but some men are just manipulative

This is completely incorrect. Russians date around a ton. It’s the default with dating apps because otherwise you’ll be outclassed by those who do.

by default everything is exclusive. some people just have different definitions of what counts as a relationship; this usually leads to a lot of pain and anger because it's rarely communicated

Not exactly. Kind of? Most people do expect some kind of acknowledgement of it being a relationship, but once it is, we wouldn't normally specify exclusivity. It's assumed.

Idk what these comments are talking about. Until you’ve had the “we are exclusively dating” talk, people definitely date/talk to multiple people. Commonly referred to as “dating around”. If you are possessive over someone you’ve just started dating or talking to without having a talk about being exclusive, you’re definitely seen as weirdly possessive!

being in an exclusive relationship and dating can mean two different things! if you’re in the phase of getting to know each other, and haven’t made anything “official” then it’s still fine to go on dates with other people. once you’re offically together, the default IS to be exclusive unless otherwise discussed

This is how it’s always been. 70 years ago you were talking about “going steady” now we call it being an exclusive. That’s literally the point of dating, then it develops into a relationship.

It depends on what you're talking about. You can go on dates with different people, but still say that you're single. But if you're "dating" someone, meaning that you're in a relationship, then no you wouldn't go on dates with other people

In the case of dating online or sometimes in person most people will identify themselves as monogamous or polygamous early on. It’s not uncommon for people to “date” multiple people at once but it’s usually early on and the other is not considered their partner yet.

most (but not all) Americans are dating with the goal of being exclusive, but it's not exclusive from the first date. usually you have a talk with the other person after a while to agree on whether you want to make the relationship exclusive.

What number is acceptable as the maximum varies by person and place, but its not until a few dates have passed where you make it “official” and add labels. The lower the acceptable number in a place the more similar it is to how Russia is like apparently

Dating can mean both having an exclusive relationship or just the act of going on dates. Just kinda depends on context and region. If they say theyve started dating in general, it's likely just casually going on dates to meet someone theyre interested in. But if you say you're dating a specific person, exclusivity is kinda implied

So we have a very fine boundary between dating and talking. If you are talking (haven’t officially set it, but testing it out), you can talk to others. Until both have officially said they are dating to eachother. But yes, once you are dating, it’s bad to date others (unless you’re polyamorous, but that’s a whole different thing)

I've seen a few people saying that open relationships are only really people who're unsatisfied, please don't listen to them. There's absolutely people like that who get into it for bad reasons, but it's also just practiced by people who just like the relationship dynamics of having multiple partners! Although that is rarely an "open" relationship itself either, safe healthy polyamory is with consent and communication with all partners, not just going and getting with whoever you want

Tbh I’ve always been willing to talk to 2-3 guys for a couple weeks but after 2 dates (personal rule, ppl deserve to not have their time wasted) I break it off if I’m not interested. If I were to have a 3rd date; I would stop talking to the other guys and focus on the one. This would be when the conversation about not seeing other people is had, and if we’re on the same page then that’s that.

No, from what I know, exclusive dating is the assumed default. The only time you'd date others is with the consent of your partner, but that is a poly relationship (several people dating eachother)

It’s because a lot of guys in the US act feminine and do not establish dominance which makes females want to explore until one does. Men on the other hand love to have their eyes wander, so we have to ask if we’re exclusive to be sure because they’re all secretly g@y

Exclusiveness is the default don’t let anyone tell you otherwise because those are the people that don’t respect their relationship partners and tend to be toxic and/or abusive however polyamory or consensual non-exclusivity does seem to be more common in the US than elsewhere particularly among the youth and surprisingly elderly couples
