The original television series, The Wild Wild West, was a highly inventive and unique show that aired on CBS from 1965 to 1969. It was a pioneering blend of multiple genres: the Western, the spy thriller, and science fiction. The show was conceived by creator Michael Garrison as "James Bond on horseback," and its premise perfectly captured that idea. Set in the 1870s during the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant, the series followed the adventures of two U.S. Secret Service agents: James West (played by Robert Conrad): The handsome, physically adept, and charming action hero, Jim West was the "muscle" of the duo. He was a master of hand-to-hand combat and a ladies' man, often using his brawn and wit to get out of perilous situations. Artemus Gordon (played by Ross Martin): A brilliant inventor and master of disguise, Artemus Gordon was the "brains" of the operation. He created a variety of ingenious gadgets and concoctions to aid their missions and could adopt an entirely new persona at a moment's notice, complete with detailed costumes and accents. Their missions, assigned directly by President Grant, involved foiling the plans of a wide array of megalomaniacal villains with schemes for national—and sometimes global—domination. Their mobile headquarters was a lavishly equipped private train car called the Wanderer, which was filled with a lab, living quarters, and various high-tech (for the time) gadgets. The show was famous for its larger-than-life, often eccentric villains, the most iconic of whom was the brilliant but diminutive Dr. Miguelito Quixote Loveless, played by Michael Dunn. The series was known for its fantastic, almost steampunk-like contraptions and devices, such as giant mechanical spiders, that felt completely out of place in the Old West setting, which was part of its charm. The dynamic between the serious, physical Jim West and the quirky, intellectual Artemus Gordon was at the heart of the series and was built on a strong foundation of trust and friendship. The Movie Adaptation Decades later, the original series was adapted into a big-budget theatrical film. The 1999 movie, also titled #WildWildWest starred Will Smith as Jim West and Kevin Kline as Artemus Gordon. Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, the film was a significant departure from the tone of the original series, leaning much more heavily into broad comedy and slapstick humor. While the movie retained the basic premise—two Secret Service agents on a mission against a mad genius—it changed several key elements: The Characters: While Will Smith and Kevin Kline filled the roles of Jim West and Artemus Gordon, their dynamic was much more antagonistic and competitive, a contrast to the close partnership of the original series. Kline also played a dual role as President Grant. The Villains: Kenneth Branagh took on the role of the main villain, a new version of Dr. Loveless whose first name was changed to Arliss. He was portrayed as a man without legs who used a steam-powered wheelchair, a visual nod to a different villain from a specific TV episode. The Tone: The movie amped up the fantastical and over-the-top elements, culminating in a climactic showdown on a giant mechanical spider. The plot and inventions were much more exaggerated for comedic effect, often overshadowing the more subtle action and spy elements of the TV show. The film's reception was generally poor, with critics and many fans of the original series expressing disappointment in its lack of chemistry, reliance on crude humor, and departure from the source material's more balanced tone. The movie ultimately failed to capture the unique and beloved spirit of the television series it was based on.
