The model, who turned 18 yesterday (May 29), recently sat down with the retired NBA star on his new show TIMEOUT, where Zaya got candid about breaking down "cultural barriers," including her early perception of her father as a Black man from Chicago. She admitted she initially assumed he wouldn’t accept her when she came out as transgender. She shared: "I think a part of us learning about the trans experience is also me just me getting more comfortable with you and talking to you about things." She added: "Cause... Chicago African American man... it's hard... it's almost like a little bit of a cultural barrier sometimes to talk to Black people about that kind of stuff. Especially queer stuff... they don't be liking us." Since coming out as trans publicly in 2020, Dwyane and his wife Gabrielle Union have continued to be vocal and visible supporters of Zaya, however, as well as advocates for the broader trans community.
