Russian here - the early 00s to early 2010s era was as good as it got in terms of societies tolerance towards us. By no means good or 100% safe, but you witnessed a blip in time when things were just alright

I had a very similar experience with a fellow hostel guest in Italy, a young man from Denmark. We wound up traveling together for three days until his train departed. Both sets of eyes were teary at the station. I've always wondered about him.
