I'm in New Zealand. you can buy 2.7 suxuki Jimny bass models for the same money as a Landcruiser 70. Lx wagon. Or 1.6 base 2 door hilux's 4x4 the cost of a base 2 door 70 series. (both cab chassies). And the both have the same engine, tow rating and roughly the same payload. the 70 series is undeniably tougher than the hilux / ranger etc, but has some downsides beyond the high cost. poor comfort, and the need to fix mismatched frount an rear track, massive turning radius etc.

Both the commenter and Doug are missing the point. People want CHEAP, RELIABLE VEHICLES in GENERAL. You cannot get into a new full size truck for under 40k in the US.
