Short answer: Buckling due to slender column with inadequate lateral support and confinement. Poor stirrup spacing, weak concrete, and long unsupported column height contributed to instability and failure.

Buckling is when a structural element (like a column or beam) bends or twists out of shape under too much pressure — not because it breaks, but because it can no longer stay straight. It usually happens when: The element is slender and tall It’s carrying a heavy load from above There’s not enough support along its length

Poor structural design and workmanship also. At the support the spacing of lateral ties should be closer while in midspan is farther. Also they should made the lateral a 135 degress hook not 90 degrees and the last one is they should made the mix of concrete reach the required psi to be able to hold the load.

all your comments are right but one thing we need to know as a structure engineer, all types of loads are calculated and designed to be carried by short or long columns. I believe the error must be from the structural engineer my engineers who posted their comments. thanks

this is buckling which is caused by overload of the structural member in this case a column

the major problem was weak reinforcements according to the load it was carrying leading to that

Zian Labs :
Failure is primarily due to poor column detailing—specifically lack of adequate transverse reinforcement and short-column effects. This causes buckling of longitudinal rebars and shear failure near the column-slab joint, especially under lateral or axial load.

as the top structure is load bearing, but being supported by a weak column 1st....choice of steel diameter 2nd....inadequate materials poor propotion 3rd...the column is very long hence tension on the joints meeting with the slab is very weak causing a rise in compression of the column there's a lot going😂😂😂honestly as an engineer am very frustrated😫

concrete is better in compression,, reinforcement bars are better in tension,,so the grade of concrete was weak...

I'm guessing the concrete shouldn't resemble a grey lumpy toilet log and the reo cover looks slightly on the small side lol

I'll answer like an Eng. Poor concrete/concreting procedures. ..leads to concrete cracks and spalling... leads to reduced (weak) section thickness.. leads to buckling😎
