He belonged to a religious denomination, the Seventh-day Adventists, whose beliefs forbid carrying weapons and killing others. Of course, there are times when an enemy attacks and naturally needs to be repelled. One could long debate the role of pacifists in such cases. In their view, if the Almighty gave a person life, then only He, by His command, can take it away. When World War II began, Desmond was called up for active military service. He explained his convictions and refused to carry a weapon. To some extent, his request was accommodated, and Doss was assigned to the medical corps. As a medic, Doss carried a large number of wounded soldiers from the battlefield. He himself was seriously wounded several times. When the colossal Battle of Okinawa erupted, Desmond managed to help 75 people. Even while wounded, he continued to provide invaluable assistance to the unfortunate. In some ways, this young man was the first conscientious objector in military service. However, he cannot be called a coward in any sense.
