Overwhelmed by a monstrous curse and watching Megumi get pinned down, Yuji realized physical strength alone wasn't enough. In a desperate bid to gain cursed energy to save everyone, he made a reckless choice: he swallowed the cursed finger whole. ​That finger belonged to Ryomen Sukuna, the feared "King of Curses" who had been dead for a thousand years. ​Instead of Sukuna taking over his mind, Yuji possessed an unheard-of anomaly of willpower: he maintained absolute control over his own body, turning himself into a living vessel for Sukuna. Under Jujutsu law, Yuji was sentenced to immediate execution to eradicate Sukuna. However, Satoru Gojo—the world's strongest sorcerer—intervened. Gojo postponed the execution on one condition: Yuji would join Tokyo Jujutsu High, locate and swallow all 20 of Sukuna's fingers, and only then be executed, eliminating the King of Curses permanently. ​Yuji accepted without hesitation, driven by his grandfather's memory to give others a "proper death".
