The TMJ pain is not a coincidence, I had the same thing from over treating a small overbite, thankfully not with headgear that's so barbaric. Your top jaw is not protruded so there will be consequences to retracting it. Once your condyles are deformed by entrapment from retracting the upper it can cause your lower jaw to go back further. I need double jaw surgery now. I hope you get a second opinion from an airway dentist or just stop treatment before your gaps close. They can mesialize the molars to close the gaps so you don't have to have any more retraction.
