My background is in the psychology of design and I’ve spent years speaking about how these trends all fall into the same trap. The idea that white creates open space is true but it works in the wrong way, it’s more like being stranded in open ocean with no land or flotation device in sight. That lack of anchors slowly unsettles the brain until anxiety takes over. What our minds need are contrast points and safe zones, which is why darker or bolder colors create grounding. So while all-grey or all-white design is harmful, the right counterbalance makes it work: charcoal walls with bright art, an all-white kitchen grounded by warm wood and bold veining, or black framed windows cutting through a farmhouse style. The better modern farmhouses, like Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher’s, lean on black wood and huge windows instead of endless white. Beige, light grey, and white-forward spaces quietly harm our psyche, and the simplest way to fix it is to embrace contrast and go bold.

Don’t get me wrong I hate the gray, but I do like some of the farmhouse stuff and maybe it’s because I grew up on a farm house but I’m just not ready to let it go yet.
