John Hughes wrote the first draft in 2 days over July 4 weekend, convinced investors to back it pointing out they could only lose one million dollars, filmed it in sequence in a closed high school, told his cast to improvise. What came out of that single room became one of the defining films of a generation. That is where The Breakfast Club begins — not on a film set, not in a casting office, but at a desk somewhere summer of 1982, John Hughes running on coffee, cigarettes and music loud enough to drown the silence, writing the way he always wrote, the material was moving fast. The whole spine came out over July 4 weekend. Five teenagers. One Saturday. One room. Nothing to do but talk. He called it "Detention." A friend's son mentioned that students at his school called morning detention "The Breakfast Club." Hughes heard it and knew immediately that was the title. When he came back to Detention — now The Breakfast Club — he had the practical problem of convincing someone to pay for it. He told investors the budget was one million dollars, the entire film would shoot in a single location. No elaborate sets. No action sequences requiring multiple expensive days. Everything would live or die in one room, which meant the downside was mathematically limited, the upside was whatever 5 good actors and a real story could produce. The location he chose was Maine North High School, Des Plaines, Illinois — a real school that had been closed since 1981, still carried, in its fluorescent-lit corridors and institutional furniture, the authentic atmosphere where teenagers had actually sat in trouble. It was not a set designed to look like a high school. It was a high school, emptied and borrowed, its reality available to be used. Hughes assembled his cast: Emilio Estevez as the athlete Andrew Clark, Molly Ringwald as princess Claire Standish, Judd Nelson as criminal John Bender, Ally Sheedy as basket case Allison Reynolds, Anthony Michael Hall as the brain Brian Johnson. Before cameras rolled, he had them do something that film productions almost never do. He rehearsed the entire movie like a play. Beginning to end. The story as it happened, in the order it happened, which gave his five actors something that film production almost never provides: the experience of living the arc in real time, of letting the emotions build in the order the story required rather than assembling them later in an editing suite. But the most remarkable thing about The Breakfast Club is what was not written. Hughes told his cast to improvise. Not to abandon the script entirely — the structure was there, the spine that had come out over that July 4 weekend was intact —to inhabit their characters fully enough to go where characters would actually go, to say things Brian or Claire or Bender would say. The famous dance sequence — the 5 of them moving through the library to We Are Not Alone — was not in the script. The final letter, closing monologue Brian writes on behalf of all of them — addressing the question of whether they would still know each other on Monday, whether what had happened in that room would survive contact with the social world outside it — Dear Mr. Vernon, we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong, but we think you're crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. The film was released on February 15, 1985. It made 51 million dollars on a one million dollar budget. It was not received, initially, as the cultural institution it would become. The film found its audience not in theaters but in the homes of teenagers who watched it on VHS, alone or with friends. The Simple Minds song that plays over the closing credits — Don't You (Forget About Me) — became one of the most recognized scenes. 2 days writing over a holiday weekend. One million dollars. A closed high school in Des Plaines, Iowa. Nobody called him on the title. He was right about that, and about almost everything else.
