What to do when a new hire is underperforming👇 It can be very stressful as a manager when you hire someone and they aren’t performing to the level required. In a situation like this open lines of communication are key. Part of your role as a manager is to increase your direct report’s awareness and help them develop so they can perform to the required level. It’s important you have realistic expectations. At trap we can all easily fall into is expecting people to arrive as the finished product. If they aren’t performing to the level you expect you must make them aware in a supportive and respectful way asap so they have the opportunity to improve. Try to avoid criticising them as this is unlikely to get the desired outcome. Instead lead with curiosity and raise their awareness by doing the following: 1️⃣ Ask them how they think things are going. This will give you an idea of their insight and can help you get to know them more. 2️⃣ Create a safe space. For example: “I’m really pleased that you’ve joined the team particularly because of your experience with XYZ so I really want to support you to find your feet so you can contribute your experience fully” 3️⃣ Share what you’ve noticed factually for example missing deadlines. 4️⃣ Ask them what you can do to support them and if they’re not sure spend time exploring this. 💬 What else would you add to help a manager in this position? 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised and will not fit every situation. Therefore, please use your own judgement when using this advice and adapt it to suit your situation. ➕ Follow Claire Benjamin for more strategies on navigating tricky work dynamics #worktips #leadershipdevelopment #emotionalintelligence #corporatelife #difficultconversations #communicationskills #managertips
