As somebody who has dealt with various pub businesses for a decade dealing with the finances in-depth, this trend in the hospitality industry has been going on for almost a decade now unfortunately. The tax hikes is just another nail in the coffin even if it’s back to pre covid rates for business rates etc. Blaming Labour for 1 year and only 2 months of tax increases is only justifiable when you consider the whole story with previous Tory government who damaged so much of this community & economy selling us out truly with corruption and shocking policies & “stealth” taxation plus circumstantial aspects like Covid that pubs have never truly recovered from. The story like you mentioned is so much bigger than one government as you’ve eluded to but didn’t mention properly focusing more on taking a pop at the current government (And the current one needs to do more I whole heartedly agree with you). Also I “love” how quarterly MTD comes in under Labour but was a George Osborne idea back in 2013 with changes in holiday let’s all mainly being related to Tory policies that just haven’t been looked at closer with landlords (Short term & long term rentals) all suffering from the government action. Watch this be picked up in the summer of 2026 by the media.

But all these pubs can be converted into HMO’s. And guess who will be housed there. And most pubs have big car parks. These can also be built on then the buildings can also converted into HMO’s. You think there’s not a plan.

we are looking for august hoilday the prices have gone crazy 😳 we go to norfolk most years now (sheringham is lovely btw) we also noticed alot of pubs closing everywhere! 😔
