@teachershaun: If you want more ongoing PDA support head to the first link in my bio and join the Inclusive Classrooms. Or drop me a message. How we respond to our PDA students makes a massive difference to their overall wellbeing. Remember, PDA isn't about necessarily about control because you the adult have told them what to do. It's about underlying anxiety and overwhelm around the demands of a task. #educationsystem #semhteacher #pdaautism #pdaprofile #specialeducation

I wish my son’s school would understand this, do PDA students ever settle into secondary school?

I think I struggle with understanding that this isn’t ‘giving in’ and ‘handing over power’

We use and teach the zones of regulation at my school. We have something like that we wear on our lanyards. They can just point to the color.

Regarding the keychains, I appreciate the idea of removing the demand of speaking and offering a non-verbal way to express emotion can be a powerful accommodation, especially for PDA students who often feel overwhelmed by direct questions or interpersonal pressure. That said, I wonder if the format might still lean heavily on neurotypical frameworks for emotional expression.
For some autistic or PDA students—especially those with alexithymia—naming a single feeling can be too abstract or simply inaccessible in the moment. A “happy/sad/just OK” scale may unintentionally narrow emotional experience into socially acceptable categories, rather than reflecting the complexity or ambiguity that many neurodivergent folks live with.
It might be helpful to consider a more open-ended approach, like offering a wide variety of emotional words or sensory metaphors in a jar where students can pick several that resonate—or none at all. Even including options like “I don’t know,” “overloaded,” or “leave me alone” can validate states that aren’t easily mapped to facial expressions.
Ultimately, I think the heart of the idea is solid—it’s about reducing demands and honouring autonomy. Maybe the next step is to invite students to co-create their own tools for expression, grounded in their lived experience.

How can I get a new student in the school to try and come into class and meet the other students. He also won’t do any work so we’ve spent the last few weeks just chatting in the garden for an hour a day. Year 3.

I think you also have to remember that often this isn’t an isolated incident it’s a culmination of continuously being misheard, misrepresented and your needs not being validated. So the drive for autonomy is also the drive for agency and to feel like you have control over your safety and narrative, on whatever level that feels like at whatever age (reflecting on this as an austisic person).

My son fits all of the traits of PDA. One thing he struggles with in school is the time table. getting to lessons on time etc. is this because a time table is a demand? and he is reacting to the demand. he always gets to lessons, just never on time 😫😫
