For me, centering for trimming is the hardest and most annoying thing 😭😭😭

i love a tiktok tutorial bc my teacher ran through centering, coning, pulling, walls, etc everything all at once and I couldn't remember anything when we actually started throwing 😭😭😭

I’m finishing up a 9 week into to pottery course now, and one of the instructors insists that the correct way for a rightly to center clay is with the right hand on the side and the left hand on top pushing down, wheel spinning counter clockwise. Most of the videos I’ve seen are like what you’re showing — left on side right on top. How much does it matter? Should I try to switch before it becomes muscle memory toomuch?

Thank you so much, the last week I feel like I lost the ability to center anything on my wheel. It’s encouraging to hear how long it took you to fully master it

What do you mean by “not let any clay come out” when you’re talking about the karate chop hand on top

I’m in high school and I was wanting to throw on the wheel since freshman year, and the first day I tried it I was able to center. I feel like sometimes the teacher and the way they teach you is very important. I really like how you teach it. It’s very similar to how I learned. But we just never did coneing. She taught us to have one hand on top and then one at the side and just use your body to keep firm.

"I'm gonna push with my body" is probably the most important sentence in there for me lmao
now that you say it I realise that (in the 2 hours in my life I did this) it's with my body more than my hand that I successfully centered shit

I always tell people who are learning: this is 2 lbs, you are what 120-220? Don’t let this little knob of clay wobble you. Brace your arm and hold your ground. Once you see it, you have a break through.
