The shopping addiction is definitely at the root of the problem. I won’t act like I’m any better, I definitely always crave having a package coming soon. I just try and push back, and when I can’t, buy secondhand

when they offer free shipping at a certain spend amount like $100 it entices them to add more items for purchase as well

not everyone can wear second hand because the sizing is difficult for their body type

*I know* I have some fast fashion pieces. I know it. however, I do my *level* best to thrift, take hand-me-downs. if I want a new garment, I cut up a T-shirt or patch a pair of jeans.

My favorite way to get close to thrift. The thrill of the hunt, finding unique items, vintage designer brands for cheap, feels good to shop from clothes that already exist . If you’re not thrifting, you are missing out.

yes. I clean houses and I see so many of my wealthy clients over buying clothes online and never wearing them. I don't know many people in my class using shein or wish because they just go to the thrift store

Shopping addiction nails it. Folks rely on it for their dopamine hit. Opting out has given me more money and time, less wardrobe hassle and maintenance and much more satisfaction. Been avoiding ff for over ten years now.

There’s so many facets to this conversation, I find it so interesting. Influencer culture on Tiktok and Instagram has helped normalise overconsumption to ridiculous levels, that and monitising hobbies like collecting!

I have never been as poor as I was as a student. I would buy £10 shoes because that's literally all I could afford at the time. I would have to rebuy them every few months. it costs a lot to be poor. if I had the money to buy better shoes at the time, I absolutely would have

I used to work at a UPS Store and then vast majority of the people I saw buying on Fast Fashion stuff were pretty well to do folks from one of the nice neighborhoods and they would buy a Ton of stuff.

From a perspective of studying peoples upbringings and past, mostly threw thrifting, estate sales, garage sales, and people’s personal stories, and what they tell me, I think richer or higher income people spend there money on fast fashion more often, not only because I only find never worn shein pants and tees everytime I go garage sale hunting in rich neighborhoods, but because when I get to talk to people selling me there clothes, In these middle or lower class areas, they explain the history of there clothes, how they wouldn’t be able to afford most clothing so they’d have to work and care more about the clothes they wanted and got, and it shows how these clothing where worth there work, they loved the clothes they worked for more, they had history to the clothes, and they last longer, usually coming from the 80-90s, not only holding togethor that long, but since they care about these clothes they really don’t buy more clothes they wouldn’t be wearing all the time. On the other end of the stick, richer income areas don’t hold on too there old clothes, usually donating or dumping them, and they tend to replace them with whatever is trending that year or month

yep! the executive director in my government department, who makes well over twice as much money as me, buys from Shein. She is straight sized and could easily afford to have a wardrobe full of Eileen fisher (my dream) but buys bagfuls of crap.

FFS have they seen the prices in Zara? shit costs a lot, I've only been in twice. I had time to kill waiting for my phone to get fixed so I walked around shops for hours, I didn't buy anything.

the only reason I buy pants is because I don't have enough pants. I refuse to buy shirts unless I really really like them because I have like 20 shirts and only really wear 7 of them (I also hate putting away clothes so I just wear what I washed)
