@stephanne221: Replying to @Doesitreallymatter let me know if this makes sense. I realize in other cultures, children do a lot more caregiving in general. I do wonder though if the caregiving responsibilities are more for the overall service of the family vs co-regulating the parents’ identities though… I’d be curious to hear about your guys’ thoughts! #family #families #familytherapy #parenting #parents #mom #dad #children #parentingtips #parenting101 #gentleparenting #parenting #parenthood #attachmentstyle #anxiousattachment #Relationship #MentalHealth #therapytok #fyp

The parent child relationship is never reciprocal. Hope that helps.

It’s that sense of a failed return on investment that permeates the relationship. They had HUGE expectations for us and feel entitled to obedience and entertainment.

If parents meet their child’s needs, naturally when they reach adulthood the child will BEGIN TO RECIPROCATE, as adults do in healthy relationships where they are respected and secure.

So many parents mistakenly assume that once their child is an adult the relationship suddenly becomes equal. It absolutely does NOT and parents need to understand this dynamic.

and if you foster a healthy relationship with your kids, later in life they WILL reciprocate. As my parents age, I'm taking on the role as caregiver and they are becoming the care recipients. I'm happy to do this, want to do this, because of the relationship we have always had.

possibly a bad analogy but this is like a therapist asking a client to reciprocate the therapist’s needs, similarly an unequal relationship by design. Also, kids don’t ask to be born, don’t have kids to then force them to be what you need ☺️✨

The parent child relationship is inherently unbalanced. It’s not equal. Children don’t ask to be here lol

Also want to note that while not needing physical care, adult children still look to their parents in the relationship for all sorts of reasons as they go through their adult milestones and it’s very impactful to be there for them 💕

It takes a village to raise a child, because the parent needs support from peers, not from the child.

Interestingly enough, my parents never viewed their romantic partners as where they should communicate their needs and get their needs met, but hot damn did they expect that from their children.

This! Also, I've noticed some parents choose to resent their children, instead of holding their actual romantic partners accountable for not giving them reciprocity!! It's terrible.

I feel like the only time a child should seek to meet a parents needs are when the parents are elderly and have provided their children with a healthy relationship throughout their life.

I think a lot of parents need to learn how to make friends.... and build their own adult support network, not rely on their children

Also, your retirement and adult care should be planned for and taken care of by you, not your kid. Savings and insurance and other responsibilities are your own not your kids.

Yeah I told my brothers I can’t be our mum’s caregiver when she becomes elderly bc I cannot do more caregiving for her bc I’ve been made responsible for her emotional wellbeing since I was a baby and it made me incredibly sick

my mom always criticized me very harshly as a kid, so much so that I rarely went to her with my problems, now as an adult my mother comes to me to regulate her emotionally, nevermind that she didn't do that for me or that I had to learn to do that on my own.

I realized when I had kids that that street is one way and I know that because my parents thought that street was 2 way. Two narcissists had a child for constant supply. I can confirm though the cycle has been broken 👍 Thanks for the autoimmune disease.

There are a lot of parental guardians but no moms in the boomer generation. And now they are getting mad we are calling them out because we became moms and realized it wasn’t the child fault a person doesn’t want to be a mom.
