Every society punishes what it sees as existential threats. In Islam, religion is not just a private belief. It is the foundation of the political and social order. So when someone publicly leaves Islam in an Islamic state, that’s not just a personal decision it’s a political act. It’s a withdrawal of loyalty from the community. This exists even in Now secular states. If you betray the state, if you aid the enemy, if you undermine the political order, that’s called treason. And what happens to people guilty of treason? They’re imprisoned for life, or even executed in some cases. So clearly, secular societies also believe that certain acts deserve the harshest punishments. The only difference is what what they consider sacred. For secular liberals, the state and constitution are sacred. For Muslims, religion is sacred.
