For the first one, the light source is not a single point - it has a width. This means the the shadow has two regions - the umbra (darkest part) and the penumbra (the partial, blurry, shadow surrounding the umbra that results from shading only part of the light). When the shadows get close enough, the penumbras merge first, enough to form a full shadow and making it look like the shadows are "kissing".
