Is your 4 year old scared to be in their bedroom alone at night? Here are some solutions that can help. First, get curious about anything that might be stressing your child. Have there been big changes recently? New school? Parents' work routine changed? Baby sibling arrived? Parents fighting more? Death of a pet? If so, make time to discuss these changes with your LO (outside of bedtime) & see how they talk about it, if they seem upset or any worries that show up. You can also have them draw out their fears with you. During the day, break out paper & markers & say “You seemed scared last night at bedtime. Can you tell me a little about that?” Draw what happens at bedtime. Draw their bed, draw your child in the bed & say “There you are lying in bed cuddling your dinosaur.” Make it silly saying things like “Oh my gosh you’re wearing an orange birthday hat!” to help lighten the mood. Then show them what happens at bedtime. “There’s mommy. She tucked you in & she’s leaving the room. Oh my gosh, mommy is dressed like a giraffe!” As you draw the scene ask questions like “Are you worried here when you’re in bed? What is it that worries you?” Maybe they’ll say they’re scared of monsters or spiders. Or that the room is too dark. Or there are scary noises like the wind outside. An activity like this opens up a communication channel with your child so you can discover what exactly is bothering them & address it. Sometimes we parents have to get silly & use creative activities to help our little kids open up & share with us what’s going on in their minds. Maybe it’s time for a nightlight or to leave the door halfway open while they fall asleep. Maybe you find out that some videos or books they’re looking at are causing scary ideas for them. Or maybe you discover that they’re struggling with a recent life event & you didn’t realize. Communication is key for figuring out what’s bothering our little ones & using these tools can help you discover the cause of your child’s bedtime fears so you can address them. Want info on my safe, loving & science-backed sleep program for 4 year olds? COMMENT ‘big kid’ below & I’ll send it to you. #BabySleepMadeSimple
