1. One thing nobody tells you before moving is just how document-focused Australia is. Be prepared for: 🗂️ physical paperwork for applications 🖨️ needing printed copies of ID 📬 letters sent in the mail for approvals 📝 forms for everything—from rentals to doctors to schools Even with online systems, Australia still loves: • paper leases • printed Centrelink documents • bank verification forms • Medicare enrolment forms • car registration paperwork You’ll find yourself scanning, printing, signing, and uploading the same documents over and over again. Most cards do cost and to get your license transferred over as well. So have about $400 set aside for all of this. ✅ Top tip: Create a digital folder with: • passport • birth certificates • licence • bank statements • rental history • payslips • Medicare card • Centrelink documents AND keep a small physical folder at home as well. Being organised makes applications so much easier and stops delays. It can feel like a mission when you’re first settling in, especially when you’re trying to work, find a house, and get the kids sorted, but once everything is set up, life becomes much smoother 2.Medicare Is a Lifesaver NZ and Australia have a reciprocal healthcare agreement, which means ✅ You can enrol in Medicare as soon as you arrive ✅ Doctor visits and hospital care are partly or fully covered ✅ You’ll get cheaper prescriptions Make sure to sign up for Medicare early, it makes a massive difference with kids, emergencies, and everyday health needs. 3.Centrelink Support Isn’t Automatic As a New Zealand citizen, you can live and work in Australia without a visa—but Centrelink is a different story. ❗You usually need to live in Australia for 2+ years before accessing most Centrelink payments but we were eligible so get onto it! It can be frustrating, especially when you’re starting out, so plan your finances carefully. 4. Rentals Are Competitive The rental market is NO joke. Expect: 🏠 Multiple applicants per property 🏠 Proof of income and references 🏠 Higher bonds (usually 4 weeks’ rent) 🏠 Inspections every 3 months Tip: Have standout CV!! Go all out, add photos (I will add my one to our CV) we received so many compliments from agencies with our CV. Have your documents ready before inspections, ID, bank statements, payslips, references. Being prepared can put you ahead of the crowd. Cars Are Expensive but Necessary In most places in Australia, having a car makes life way easier especially when you’re travelling and you have 3 kids. So having no car wasn’t an option for us. Important things to know: 🚗 Registration (rego) is expensive 🚗 Insurance is recommended 🚗 Roadworthy certificates may be required 🚗 Fuel costs add up quickly but are WAY cheaper!!! Although you travel a lot more we spend maybe $80-100 a week on gas and that’s with daily travel. 5. The Reality It can be: ✅ emotionally hard ✅ financially stressful ✅ challenging starting from scratch But it’s also: ✨ full of opportunity ✨ better work options ✨ amazing for families ✨ worth it in the long run Moving to Australia can change your life, give it time, stay patient, and keep reminding yourself why you made the move. The sacrifices now can set you up for a future you’re proud of. Through the tears, arguments and many “I want to go home” it’ll all be worth it, it does eventually get easier.
