My great grandparents left New Orleans in 1943 to Northern California because my great grandfather found employment and my great grandmother didn’t want to raise her kids in the segregated south. So grateful for their sacrifice 💛

My grandma left deep Georgia at 18 with the help of her basketball coach that got her a scholarship at the women’s college. She learned receptionist work and became the first black court reporter in my city. Shoutout to our grandmas!!!!!!

This is why when people say, "We are not our ancestors". They are correct. Our ancestors had so many obstacles, but never gave up.

After reading The Warmth of Other Suns, I have such an increased level of respect for our direct ancestors and the sacrifices they made to make sure our generations had a better chance at life. ❤️❤️❤️

So many people forget the internal displacement for African Americans that was the great migration.

All it takes is one person in the family to take that leap and do better and generations later I’m still thanking my great grandparents for leaving Europe and escaping chattel slavery. My life would look so different if they didn’t

I’m confused on the timeline. What do you mean that at one point in time there were people who are picking cotton while there was others getting bachelor degrees??

My grandma didn't want to pick cotton either. She told her father she wasn't gonna work the land. She joined the army and was part of the 6888th battalion in WWII, went to college and got her bachelor's and master's degree. She also was an educator.
