Word problems don’t have to start with “What operation do you use?” 👀 One of the biggest things I’ve been focusing on with my mathematicians is making the STORY the hook. 📖✨ Today I recorded the beginning of our Cognitive Guided Instruction (CGI) / Number Stories work, and I wanted to share what this actually looks and sounds like in an elementary classroom. We started with a simple word problem—not because I expect students to immediately solve it independently, but because I want them to become comfortable with the LANGUAGE of mathematics and the discourse that comes with it. You’ll see me: ✨ Hook students into the story ✨ Have students repeat/restate important information ✨ Use manipulatives to make the math concrete ✨ Have multiple students read and engage with the story ✨ Ask comprehension questions like “How many more?” and “How many less?” ✨ Push students to explain their thinking ✨ Encourage students to respond to and build on one another’s ideas ✨ Model what mathematical discourse sounds like ✨ Redirect behaviors while still keeping the mathematical thinking moving And honestly, THIS is the part of teaching that I wish more people could see. 🥹 It’s not just “teaching them how to solve a word problem.” We’re teaching them how to listen, make sense of a situation, communicate their thinking, use tools, defend their reasoning, and participate in a mathematical community. This is also the type of language and discourse that students encounter throughout Eureka Math, so building those habits from the beginning of the year is SO important. Simple problem.
