Overview of Stroke Definition A stroke is a sudden interruption of blood supply to the brain, leading to brain cell damage and neurological deficits. It is a medical emergency that requires rapid diagnosis and treatment to prevent permanent disability or death. Main Types of Stroke 1. Ischemic Stroke (≈ 85% of strokes) Caused by a blood clot or blockage that stops blood flow to a part of the brain. Common causes: Thrombosis (clot forms in brain artery) Embolism (clot travels from elsewhere, e.g., heart in atrial fibrillation) Atherosclerosis 2. Hemorrhagic Stroke (≈ 15% of strokes) Caused by rupture of a blood vessel in the brain, leading to bleeding. Causes: Hypertension (most common) Aneurysm rupture Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) Head trauma 3. Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) – “Mini-stroke” Temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain. Symptoms resolve within 24 hours but warning sign for future stroke. Risk Factors Non-modifiable: Age, sex, family history, race. Modifiable: Hypertension, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, obesity, atrial fibrillation, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol use. Signs & Symptoms (FAST mnemonic) F – Face drooping: one side of the face droops or feels numb. A – Arm weakness: inability to raise one arm fully. S – Speech difficulty: slurred or strange speech. T – Time to call emergency services: act immediately. Other possible symptoms: sudden vision changes, loss of coordination, severe headache (especially in hemorrhagic stroke). Diagnosis Physical & neurological exam. Brain imaging: CT scan (to differentiate ischemic from hemorrhagic) MRI (more detailed) Blood tests: CBC, coagulation profile, electrolytes, glucose. Cardiac evaluation: ECG, echocardiogram. Treatment Ischemic Stroke: tPA (tissue plasminogen activator) within 3–4.5 hours of onset (if eligible). Mechanical thrombectomy for large vessel occlusion. Antiplatelet therapy (aspirin) after bleeding is excluded. Hemorrhagic Stroke: Control bleeding (surgery if needed). Manage intracranial pressure. Blood pressure control. TIA: Risk factor modification, antiplatelets, anticoagulation if cardioembolic. --- Complications Paralysis or muscle weakness Speech/swallowing difficulties Cognitive impairment Depression Death --- Prevention Control blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes. Stop smoking and limit alcohol. Maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Manage atrial fibrillation. #fypシ゚viralシ #foryoupage #everyone #health #nclextip
