Independent support workers we have to pay our own tax, super, insurance, car expenses, our own sick and holiday pay and also put money aside when our clients want to take holidays or have sick days.

This is before tax, expenses, insurance etc. also sw isn’t always safe. The amount of times I’ve heard of people being with unsafe clients and SA, abuse trauma that come with it

Professional boundaries. You can be friendly but you are there to do a job. Experienced Disability Support Worker here. You need empathy, understanding and patience to be a good SW.

If you really want to be a support worker you need to be smart, motivated, easygoing and caring. If you can’t be at least all of these things then please don’t do it. Speaking as a disabled client we are sick to death of people only being there for the money.

$68 hourly for me, way more on weekends. Cert 4 in Individual Support. Cert 2 in mental health. Work for yourself plus agency, i pick & choose when i work!
