Dry, flaky skin around the folds of your nose isn’t always simply a sign that your skin needs more oil. Seborrhoeic dermatitis tends to affect sebum-rich areas of the face, including the sides of the nose, eyebrows, hairline and beard area. One of the microorganisms involved is Malassezia, a lipophilic yeast that naturally forms part of the skin microbiome. Unlike humans, Malassezia species have lost key genes involved in making their own fatty acids, so they depend heavily on external lipids. Their lipases break down lipids in sebum, releasing fatty acids that can contribute to inflammation and disruption of the skin barrier in susceptible people. That’s also why I pay attention to what I put back onto my skin after dealing with a flare. Ingredients such as cetearyl alcohol, stearic acid and glyceryl stearate are common components of cream formulations, but I prefer a more selective approach for my seb-derm-prone areas. My routine has two different jobs: Chinsei Seb Derm Serum → directly where I tend to flake, such as the nose folds, brows, beard or scalp. It uses C8 MCT and C30 squalane as its lipid base. Anshin Malassezia-Safe Moisturiser → for hydration, with 5% urea, hyaluronic acid and glycerin, without fatty acids or fatty alcohols. The aim isn’t to stop moisturising because you have seb derm.
