Officer Rippeon claimed Wert “hid behind a pillar,” but the bodycam starts with Wert already sitting on the bench. For Rippeon’s story to be remotely true, Wert would have had to get up, hide/move behind the pillar, then come back and sit down—all before the video even began. That’s impossible and absurd. The only plausible explanation? Rippeon flat-out lied to create “reasonable suspicion” so he could demand ID and justify an unlawful stop. Rippeon even admitted he was mad Wert “tried to dictate to me that he was going to leave” and wanted to “teach him, unfortunately, the hard way.” But here’s the bottom line: Paul Wert was 100% right to tell Rippeon to back off and leave. He did NOT have to explain why he was there, did NOT need to show ID, and had done NOTHING illegal. He was free to leave whenever he wanted—no cop’s permission needed. The whole stop was unlawful retaliation, pure and simple.
