Piston Assembly and Installation into the Cylinder Block | Mazda 2.2D SkyActiv • In this video, we’re performing one of the key stages of engine overhaul — assembling the piston and installing it into the cylinder block. We’re working on a Mazda 2.2 SkyActiv-D diesel engine. • 🔹 First, we install new piston rings onto the piston. 🔹 To do this properly and without damage, we use special ring expanders, which allow for careful and precise installation. 🔹 The piston rings are positioned with their gaps at 120° from each other, forming a “triangle” — this ensures even compression and reduces blow-by. 🔹 All parts are lubricated thoroughly to avoid scoring during the initial engine start. 🔹 We then use a ring compressor tool to compress the rings and insert the piston into the cylinder, making sure it’s installed in the correct orientation. • Once the piston is in: • We tighten the connecting rod bolts with the correct torque specs. • Then we rotate the crankshaft to check for any binding or abnormal resistance. ⚠️ Important Note: The piston and connecting rod group is one of the most heavily loaded components in the engine.
