He loved Alma, but he loved Jack too. He was stuck between loving two people, one he knew he shouldn't have. Yes, he cheated and threatened her, but he was scared. He knew what would happen if anyone found out about him and Jack, and when he knew that she knew, he acted out of fear. The whole point of the movie is to get you to feel sympathy for everyone no matter what. Everyone in the movie deserved better.

The reason why I lowkey get upset with Ennis, is because he could treated Alma better like Jack was nice with Lureen, yes Ennis was more rough but he could still treated her better like Jack
