op wouldn't see this but I'm going to type it as if she (or anyone else who experienced something like this) would. None of this was your fault. You immediately blocked him and made your stance clear. Your situation gave the wife the info she needed to leave and that may have saved her. If her and her kids were still living with him when he attempted that, this could have been so much worse.
