The Newfoundland accent is the only North American accent I can think of that has a lilt the way Irish iconically does, that’s where the comparison comes from.

If you slow down a southern American accent it’s British, if you slow down a Louisiana accent it is French, if you get a Newfie to slow down when talking, it’s Irish. Well studied phenomenon in Linguistics 🥰

I love the trick I learned from a comment on one of this guys videos and he actually replied to it that said if you’re from the south in the US and you’re having a hard time understanding the Newfoundland accent just listen as if ur listening to someone with a Deep southern accent and when u do it switches something in ur mind and u can automatically start understanding what he’s saying. I now know it works for the Irish accent too! 🥰

I’m from Victoria (other coast) and we have a big Newfie population which grew up with, so I have this weird mix of BC and Newfie accent, and no one can ever guess where I am from, they think Boston or Chicago a lot 😂

My FAVORITE accent in Canada is New Brunswick / Newfoundland French. I understand French but with that accent, oh my 😅 I find charades is a better form of communication at that point 🍻

When I went to see the musical Come Frome Away I was blown away by the accent! It’s set in Gandor, Newfoundland and they just sound so Irish. I think they have strong connections with Cork if I remember correctly
