I wish I knew this earlier than I did. I’ve spent a lot of my life trying to convince others why growth in me is important. I don’t think my growth needs to be shared by everyone, but it’s still important to me. And when people haven’t accepted it, I started to doubt if my growth was really growth at all. And so I’d go back in, I’d second, triple guess, I would pore over every detail and come to the conclusion that maybe I’m seeing it from the wrong angle. Only to later realize I was second guessing good things, while others around me stood still. They didn’t want change because it would mean having to reflect on themselves, something many of us avoid. I’m by no means perfect, nor does every stage of growth in my life equate to something necessarily good. But it’s important we surround ourselves at least with people who are willing to hear us out. When I recently was told my new direction in work with Mr Skelly felt emotionless and empty, I sat with it. I’m still sitting with it. I’m still me, Christian Watson, the imperfect 33 year old dude who designs, collects vintage and writes for a living. But it made me realize that some people just don’t want us to change. It’s not necessarily a negative thing. But good can keep good company, and bad company tends to want bad company. If you want to progress and someone else doesn’t want that for you, you’re stuck at a crossroads: do you carry on pretending you’re not you to appease someone else? Do you lose someone in your life to grow? All any of us can do is be ourselves, which let’s face it, annoys the heck out of us internally anyway. I struggle with self-hate, self-doubt etc, it’s no wonder other people could feel that way about me too haha! But still, I’m just me. And not everyone’s meant to be on that journey. We’ve gained 3 million followers in just under two years. That is entire cities worth of people. Can I please all of them? Not a chance on this earth. I can only hope my work speaks well and loudly to those willing to receive, and to those who aren’t I hope it continues to be a beacon if ever there’s a time for you to come back around.
