As a therapist, the “yes AND” is 100% where it’s at. And yes trauma is a reason and NOT an excuse. Thank you for saying this.

My parents use different logic. His trauma made him lash out to traumatize me and then he was retraumatized by the guilt of what he did to me, so he lashed out MORE so even though i managed not to hurt anyone in my oain he’s the real victim

6 generations of SA and they all used it as an excuse. It stopped with me! It's a choice your son made. He chose to carry it on with your daughter who BTW is amazing I saw her video last night, but she is making him accountable for his actions. 'but it was done to me too' Is NOT an excuse or a reason.

I don't understand how anyone can watch the previous 5 parts of this and still advocate for him to return home or shame you for not allowing him to. You are protecting your daughter AND helping him to receive the care and support he needs elsewhere. Your daughters safety comes first. Sympathising with her son for the experiences that likely led to his situation is OK, excusing his behaviour and exposing her to further harm is not. You are doing one hell of a job in unimaginable circumstances 💜

I've never understood that excuse, if you know how it feels to be a victim, why would you do that to someone else.

1000% I was SA’d, emotionally, physically, mentally abused and neglected as a child…. Have I ever done anything like that? Nope never! It makes me furious when people use it as an excuse! Have I struggled with my mental health and alcohol addiction because of it? Yes! Have I hurt anyone else? Nope!

Yes!! I tell my children that trauma is a reason, not an excuse. It helps explain, but does not give a card to hurt others. We are responsible for our healing so we do not hurt others.

Knowing you are traumatized means you understand your reactions and responses and the impact of your past on your present. That’s where it begins and ends. Trauma is ax experience and a factor but not an excuse or reason for bxs.

Explanations not excuses. Trauma explains where we are, but it doesn’t excuse the behavior. Many people confuse the two

I'm sitting here wishing you had been my Mom. My oldest brother is currently a guest of the state of Oklahoma and all 4 of us younger siblings are no contact with him. Mother is complicated.

but why wasn't she believed...FIVE YEARS of abuse and noone took it further from her reporting and back tracking? Repeated reporting....that couldn't all be false...Feel like the kid should have been moved long ago just to separate them?

as a child who was abused by their sibling, this is healing to see a parent care for both children and holding accountability.

Not defending at all, but you’re also talking about a child at the time they don’t know what to do with their trauma. It’s a hard situation all around.
