American here…I’ll explain, I used to be a server in highschool. So minimum wage was like $5 back then (I’m almost 40 now). For servers you got paid $2.15 an hour due to making tips. So the tips were to cover the very low hourly rate. Now somehow someway over time it got to be ridiculous. Technology evolved and businesses used tips to cover what they should have been paying their employees. Like a tariff. They just put the responsibility on the customer.
