What happens to us when we die? The Buddha did not teach an eternal soul travelling unchanged from life to life. But he also did not teach that nothing continues at all. This teaching on rebirth, non-self (Anattā), and dependent origination, invite us to look deeply into causes, conditions, suffering, and becoming. What links one life to the next is not a self or soul, but a causal continuum. A stream of conditions flowing from one existence to another. The Buddha did not teach that a permanent entity travels from life to life. Instead, he pointed to a process, shaped by several interconnected factors. First, craving. A deep, often unconscious thirst for existence, for becoming, or even for non-existence. This is the main fuel that propels the stream forward. Second, kamma. Our intentional actions of body, speech, and mind. Wholesome or unwholesome intentions create seeds, tendencies that shape what arises next. Third, consciousness. The stream of awareness that arises moment by moment, conditioned by craving and kamma. At death, this consciousness does not vanish completely, but re-establishes itself in a new form, according to the dominant conditions. Fourth, ignorance and dependent origination. These keep the whole cycle spinning, until understanding begins to cut through. The classic analogy is a flame passing from one candle to another. Nothing permanent jumps across. But a new flame arises because of the previous one. In the same way, the next life arises because of the conditions present at the end of this one. Craving, kamma, consciousness. Not a soul. Just causes and conditions unfolding. #buddhateachings #buddhawisdom #buddha #rebirth #anatta
