I was at the junk yard with just my ratchet and sockets thinking I could just rip the caliper off the line without cutting it, and let me tell you it takes the force of God to get that line to break.

Depends on the weight.. These tiny Toyota aygo calipers won't do any dmg if you let them hang. But for the more powerful cars with big heavy calipers you just support them
