@bandrhomestead: Do you have mulch in your garden beds? Here’s why we love it in ours! #homestead #homesteader #foilhatgang #growyourownfood #garden #growyourownfood #gardenproject
Straw! Straw! Straw! Never wood “MULCH”, draws the nitrogen out. People hear mulch and think wood chips. Straw is best.

Do you have any tips for getting things like mulch and materials for a raised bed on a low budget?

do you think chipped wood would do the same thing?

Straw made grass pop up EVERYWHERE. I got EZ Straw and no grass from that. Easier to apply as well.

I kind of feel like it depends on your zone and how often you water. I had mulch in my beds and it was a slug heaven. 💗💗💗

I love using straw! We also add a layer of straw in the very bottom of our beds to help retain moisture under the soil also 💖

I made the mistake of not waiting mulch until after my seeds sprouted. But when I added mulch when I planted seedlings, it did really well!

I used EZ straw and I felt like it compacted too much. I’d use regular straw next time, the little chopped pieces I’m not fond of. Larger pieces like yours would be better I think.

I used straw last year and had tons of grass come up. So this year I used this and I have had way less grass come up in my raised beds. Game changer!!!!

I use grass clippings as mulch in my garden and totally agree. Areas with mulch do so much better in the current year, & the following year the beds don’t need as much amending either as the mulch breaks down feeding the soil

I agree! Soil dries out too fast and roots get hot without mulch! I’ve been contemplating putting something around my tomatoes. I mulched my zinnias flowerbed that used to be a vegetable garden.

Chip Drop will bring 15-20 yards of wood chips for $20. It's been amazing in our vegetable garden 🥰
