But this morning was just… silent. Ordinary. Forgotten. No one remembered. My parents, the people who brought me into this world, they didn’t even say “Happy Birthday.” Not even a glance that said, “Oh! It’s today.” They moved through the morning like it was just another Tuesday, or Thursday, or any day that didn’t matter. And I just sat there, quietly brushing my teeth, forcing myself to eat breakfast with a lump in my throat. I waited, maybe they'd remember at lunch. They didn’t. I told myself it’s okay, people are busy. Maybe they’re planning something secretly. But the day went on, minute by minute, and all I got was silence. No cake. No candle. Not even a text. It’s strange how loud a birthday can feel when it’s this quiet. How lonely you can be in a house full of people. How you can celebrate yourself in whispers while everyone else talks over your existence. I thought they’d at least notice how quiet I became. How I smiled less. How I stared a little longer at nothing in particular. But they didn’t. And maybe that hurts more than forgetting the day. Still, I whispered it to myself. Happy Birthday to me. Because even if they forgot, I won’t. Because I deserve to be remembered. Even if it's just by me. So here’s to me, for growing another year. For surviving moments like this. For learning to give myself the love I wish others gave me. For holding my own hand when no one else remembered to. Happy Birthday to me.
