The metal ring should be against the nut, so when you tighten it, it doesn’t pull the centre out of the disk.

if you cutting a 6mm sheet or less the metal ring facing you and anything above 6mm metal ring facing the other way

The left is the way most people use it, but if there is a correct and incorrect way, why the manufacturer doesn't provide directions like an arrow printed station the direction like diamond disks have .🤔

I always fit as like the left one as on a thicker disk it is dished and can only be fitted writing towards the guard why change just because it can be fitted upside down
