Here's what you can do. Direct seed one seed per hole and tray the extra so that you can transplant the possible missing seedlings. This way you save the seeds instead of thinning out. You will understand when you buy hybrid seeds that cost a lot, I couldn't afford one seed going to waste.

For young plants, place granular fertilizer 6 inches away from base of the stem. Look at the different methods of application, eg. Full moon, half moon, side dressing etc and apply them. When plants are established, place around the drip line. Do some research on this content and sharpen you knowledge. Love the attitude towards farming. You will excel. Keep up the good work. Let no one discourage you. I'm here if you need advice.

You are fertilizing too soon, the plant need 2 to 4 true leaf before it will accept fertilizer, true leaf is the leaf that come after the first 2 weird shape
