California belongs to the United States. It was acquired through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed on February 2, 1848, which ended the Mexican-American War (1846–1848). The United States paid Mexico $15 million for California and other territories, including what is now Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and parts of several other states, totaling about 525,000 square miles. Mexico also relinquished claims to Texas. Before the war, California was part of Mexico, having been under Spanish control until Mexico’s independence in 1821. The U.S. took control of California during the war, and the treaty formalized its annexation.
