@industrythotleader: Just got back from Japan's Seto Inland Sea, diving deep into the Benesse Art Site. This isn't just an art collection, it's a pilgrimage site scattered across islands like Naoshima and Teshima. Created by the Japanese billionaire Fukutake family, it gave me serious Bond villain vibes (but with beautiful Tadao Ando museums!). Think people fishing next to helipads and Sotheby's totes beside villagers. Had to research: the founder's vision was revitalization, but the son, an art collector, truly transformed these islands with contemporary art, like the Chichu Art Museum and site-specific pieces in abandoned houses. It's a fascinating blend of wealth, art, and community revitalization. 500k visitors a year proves it works, but what about separating the art from the collector? Let's discuss! #BenesseArtSite #Naoshima #Teshima #SetoInlandSea #JapanArt #TadaoAndo #FukutakeFamily #ContemporaryArt #ArtTourism #JapaneseArchitecture #ArtCollector #TravelJapan #ArtHistory #NaoshimaIsland #ChichuArtMuseum #JamesTurrell #WalterDeMaria #Setouchi #IslandArt

Ive been there too and it was the most surreal utopian place Ive ever been. I felt equally as uneasy like Bond but it was so inspiring too I even started writing again.

It’s cool when people actually center the world in art, but weird that it had to exist bc of exploitation (bc no billionaire earned it “fairly”). I def still would love to see this! Thanks for sharing

I really appreciate this history and perspective. I’ve long had Naoshima Island on my radar for an art pilgrimage… and it has just moved up the list!

Booking a room inside the main museum accessible only via private funicular definitely feels like Bond villain territory.

i feel like it's icky bc it's eerily enough being controlled over like the whole island urban planning and whatnot. it doesn't sit right bc it's not right to have that much power over a whole island....

the problem i could see with this type of ultra wealthy “philanthropy” is i imagine living in a town owned by one family is there being no real checks & balances to their power and a limit to the free speech allowed to anyone who lives under their territorial control

you need to go to MONA in Hobart, Tasmania. privately owned, interesting story and major bond villain vibes. it’s also where the ladies lounge art installation was initially installed that made international news. the museum also has ai weiwei's white house which was wild to see.

I found everything so stunning when I was there too. I totally get what you mean though. Do you think that the ‘unsettling, Bond villain vibe’ might also come from how spaces like that (and contemporary art in general) can sometimes feel quite elite? Even when it’s beautiful, there’s often this underlying sense that access to the art, whether physically, intellectually, or socially, (or all at the same time) is still closely tied to class, income, and privilege. So in short the „bond villain“ can be
