@meghannmcuniff: Elizabeth Laposata was chief of the statewide medical examiner's office in Rhode Island in 2003 when a fire killed 100 people at The Station nightclub in the town of West Warwick. (It wasn't just a tragedy. It was a crime: The nightclub's owners both went to prison.) Laposata's office was heavily criticized for its response to the fatalities, including criticism of Laposata for not personally visiting the death scene. Prosecutor Hank Brennan questioned her about this in cross-examination in Karen Read's re-trial in Norfolk County Superior Court in Dedham, Massachusetts, yesterday (Tuesday, June 10, day 30). Laposata dismissed the criticism as "a flurry of negative press without any basis" and said she had an investigator on scene and was tending to leadership duties at the office. "It was untrue ... Trial is back in session today (Wednesday, June 11, day 31) with testimony from the final defense witness, Andrew Rentschler of ARCCA. Prosecutors say Read was drunk when she struck her boyfriend, Boston Police Department Officer John O'Keefe, with her SUV outside Boston Police Department Detective Brian Albert's home early on Jan. 29, 2022, and drove away. Read's defense is that Albert and Brian Higgins, a federal ATF agent, killed O'Keefe and she's being framed as part of a broad Massachusetts law enforcement conspiracy. #karenread #law #crime #court #legal
